An Introduction to up.time Element Grouping
up.time allows for very flexible grouping of your monitored elements. Control over your elements and their grouping is found completely under the My Enterprise tab. The groupings that you define in My Enterprise define how elements are grouped in the GlobalScan and how elements are grouped for reporting. The two allowed methods of grouping are listed below:
Element Groups: Element groups allow you to group elements into a multi-tier layout. The group that an element fits into is used in conjunction with User Groups to define what set of up.time users can view the element. An element can only be a member of one element group, this ensures that User Visibility of the element is not confused by complex multi-grouping
Element Views: Views allow elements to be grouped together multiple times. This allows you to group elements by any attribute you like, line of business, architecture, location, # cpu's, whatever meets your needs. Views can then be shared with specific users. In combination with Element Groups views allow almost infinite grouping and sharing ability.
Although both Groups and Views can be used to select multiple elements for reporting purposes Views are often preferred as many different groupings of elements can be created to meet the different reporting outlooks that your users may have of your up.time enterpirse.
In the image below we see a simple example of up.time groupings. The top multi-level list shows a small set of elements grouped into different sub groups, each group can be assigned specific visibility to other users. The lower list is an element View, in this case showing a set of Solaris elements. Notice that the 231 element is grouped in both the Solaris View and Sub Group 1.
