Creating Service Monitors
Overview
Walkthrough
There are very few requirements for monitoring a system via up.time. If you intend to gather performance statistics, up.time will need some method of accessing the statistics; either the via the up.time Agent or "Agentless" via Net-SNMP or NRM.
- from the "My Portal" page, click the "Services" tab
- click the "Add New Service Instance" link on the left side of the page
- this is a list of all the service monitors available in up.time
- for the purpose of this tutorial, we will create a Process Count Check service monitor
NOTE: The "Process Count Check Settings" only apply to this specific service monitor; whereas the other fields are standard across each service monitor.
- View - the drop down menu in the top right corner of the window allows you to select the type of view, either Standard or Advanced, for the service monitor.
- Service Name - enter a name to identify the service monitor
- Description - enter a longer explanation for the service monitor
- Host - this field specifies which systems this service monitor will be applied to; either to a single system, an already existing service group that contains a list of systems, or to none
- Port - this is the port that the agent software is using on the system that this monitor will be applied to
- Use SSL - needs to be checked if the agent has been configured to use SSL
- Process Name - name of a process to check for
- Process Occurrences - thresholds for the amount of instances of the process running on the system
- Retained Data Tracking - you can retain the data returned by the service monitor (ie. the number of instances of a given process) by selecting the "Retained Data Tracking" check box
- Monitored - unselect this check box if you want to create the service monitor but you do not want it to run at this time
- Timeout - the length of time to allow the service monitor to receive a response
- Check Interval - the length of time between a successful check and the next check
- Recheck Interval - if the previous check failed, then the service monitor will at a frequency determined by the "Recheck Interval"
- Max Rechecks - the number of rechecks before an alert is triggered
- Notification - if this is unselected then no alerts will be generated for this service monitor
- Alert Interval - the length of time to wait before sending out another alert
- Alert On Critical - if this box is unselected then Critical level alerts will not be sent
- Alert On Warning - if this box is unselected then Warning level alerts will not be sent
- Alert On Recovery - if this box is unselected then alerts generated when the service monitor recovers will not be sent
- Alert On Unknown - if this box is unselected then alerts generated because the service is in an Unknown state will not be sent
- Time Period - specifies the time of day and day of the week when this service monitor should be run
- Alert Profile - the alert profile that will be used for generating alerts
- Action Profile - the action profile that will be used to "do things" (ie. run a script), when the alert thresholds are reached
- click the "Finish" button to create the service monitor
