article Windows Executable Fails to Properly Initialize

Problem

When running the monitoring station on Windows, a pop-up containing the following error message appears:

<exe> failed to initialize properly

Where <exe> is usually ping.exe or cmd.exe.

This problem often occurs if the background heap for the system and the desktop is too small.

Solution

Note: This solution requires you to edit the Windows registry. Make a backup of the registry before continuing.

To increase the size of the system and desktop heap:

  1. Select Start > Run.
  2. In the Open field, type regedit and then click OK.
  3. Locate the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSessionManagerSubSystems

  4. In the right pane of Registry Editor, double click Windows.
  5. In the Edit String dialog box, locate the SharedSection parameter in the Value data text box.
  6. Specify an increased value for the SharedSection parameter.

The SharedSection parameter specifies the system and desktop using the following format:

    SharedSection=<xxxx>,<yyyy>,<zzzz>

    Where:

    • <xxxx> is the maximum size of the system-wide heap (in kilobytes)
    • <yyyy> is the size of the desktop heap
    • <zzzz> is the size of the desktop heap for each desktop that is associated with a non-interactive Windows station
    • Increase the value of <zzzz> to at least 1024. Increasing this value by 256 KB or 512 KB typically provides enough memory to deal with any initialization errors in background sessions.

  7. Click OK to save the changes.
