article Monitoring HTTP Services in a Load Balanced Cluster

We recommend the following approach to monitor web sites available on a load balanced cluster:

  1. Install the up.time agent on each of your cluster nodes and monitor them with up.time to allow for both service monitoring and performance profiling across each cluster node.
  2. Add an HTTP service monitor to each monitored node using the correct URL and virtual host settings to monitor the status of the web sites on each of the nodes.
  3. Add the Virtual IP for your cluster to up.time as a Virtual Node Type.
  4. Add an HTTP service to the Virtual IP element to monitor the overall health of the web site cluster.

You may also wish to monitor any load balancing network devices or databases that are associated with the web site.
