Alert profiles define groups of users that will receive an alert. You can also specify the amount of time before an alert is escalated. This process depends on 3 factors:
The Start Alerting on Notification Number field sets the alert number to start alerting on. The alerting frequency is specified by the Alert Interval in each service monitor (default 120 minutes). For example: if a monitor is configured with an Alert Interval of 120 minutes, and has an Alert Profile attached with the Start Alerting on Notification Number set to 3, users attached to that alert profile will start receiving alerts after 6 hours.
One recommended strategy for using escalations is to set up at least 2 alert profiles:
